Believe it or not, When to Change Your Air Conditioner Filter, is one of the most common questions we receive as well as a very common answer to a few air conditioner issues. Your air conditioner or HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) filter does require attention and learning how to care for it should be as important as scheduling yearly maintenance. Annual maintenance for your air conditioner (and furnace) from our professionals will lead to improved efficiency and comfort inside your home. Knowing when to change your air conditioner filter will make you the hero of your home — trust me.
Q: Do I need to schedule annual maintenance for my air conditioner unit if I change the air filter myself?
A: Yes. Yes. Yes. Annual maintenance is the only guarantee to air conditioner air flow efficiency. Filters aren’t the only things that need to be replaced regularly. Our technicians will thoroughly clean, inspect, and make sure all parts are in good working order.
Q: Where is my air filter located?
A: Typically your air conditioner filter is located near the return air duct. If not there, look for an access point or panel near the unit. Still cannot find it? No problem, call us and we will help you pinpoint the air filter location.
Q: What size of air filter do I need?
A: Commonly, the size or part number of the filter is printed on the outside of the filter itself and generally reads length x height x thickness. There are several brands and grades and can be purchased at most major retailers.
Q: How do I change the air filter?
A: IMPORTANT: Turn your unit OFF using the power switch near where the air filter is located. You will hear the machine shut down which is what you want. If you leave your unit on, you increase the possibility of pushing all of the gunk your filter has trapped into your unit and back out into your house. The act of changing the filter is as simple as pulling out and discarding the old filter and replacing it with a new one. There should be an arrow that points the direction of the airflow and indicates the way the filter should be inserted. Write the date on the air filter to act as a reminder of when to change the filter again.
Q: When do I change my air conditioner filter?
A: It depends. Answer these questions: Do I have pets? Does anyone have allergies? Is there construction near me? Do I want to save money? What type of filter did I purchase? When you change your air conditioner filter is dependent upon these answers. Air filters trap common allergens, pet dander, and dust and when the filter is dirty it is less efficient. Once again, air flow efficiency in your air conditioner directly relates to saving money. The recommended air filter change times also vary depending on the grade of filter you buy. Some are monthly, some 3 months or even 6 months, but you should visually inspect your filter every 30-45 days and if looks dirty – change it!
