When to Replace Your Air Conditioner

Spring is upon us.  The trees and flowers are blooming, birds are returning to Kansas City, the Royals season has started; life is good.  Replacing your air conditioner is probably the furthest thought on your mind, but it shouldn’t be.  Now is the time to jog your memory to last year’s summer.  Were your utility bills a shock?  Were you grouchy because you were hot inside your home?  Or my favorite, did you boycott cooking because if you used the stove your house never cooled back down.   If you are going to take advice on when to replace your air conditioner, take it from me.  Here are a few telltale signs and symptoms that may mean replacing your air conditioner shouldn’t be the furthest thought on your mind.

AGE:    The majority of all major brands of air conditioner units are built to function efficiently for 10-15 years.  If your unit is somewhere in between, it is probably time to replace it.

INCREASE IN UTILITY BILLS:  An increase in your utility bill is directly related to the air conditioner’s ability to function efficiently.  Energy efficiency is measured by it’s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) or the standard measure to indicate the amount of cooling output vs. the energy input.   A high SEER number equals increased energy efficiency, with the U.S. Energy Department setting a minimum of 13.   Our qualified technicians are trained to evaluate the SEER and will help you decide when to replace your air conditioner.

REPAIR COSTS:  At Blue Heating & Cooling we like to know our customers on a first-name basis, but not because we have to frequent your home for air conditioner repairs.  An increase in repairs or more costly repairs may mean it is time to replace your air conditioner.

DECREASED COMFORT:  This goes without saying.  If your family is not comfortable in every room in your house, either you are too hot or too cold it is probably time to replace your air conditioner.

The above mentioned signs of when to replace your air conditioner are just a few things to consider when making this decision.  Our qualified technicians not only provide timely service, but are trained to discuss your air conditioner expectations, size your unit to fit your home, and help to budget this expense.  Blue Heating and Cooling offers a range of brands and products and are authorized dealers of Lennox and Trane.  So, if when to replace your air conditioner is now, call us.  We’ll help find a unit to fit your needs.

Oh, and if you are the one who does the cooking you can still boycott it if replacing the air conditioner was your idea, you deserve it.
